“Management is about getting people to do something for you; leadership is about getting people to do something for themselves.”
–Monty Moran, former CEO, Chipotle
As I say about fat loss, building a business, and relationships…
“Success is simple once you accept how hard it is.”
That goes for Leadership too.
It’s simple, but not easy.
These are the 7 Principles of Great Leadership in 2021…
-
- Bring the Energy (you on your worst day must still be better than everyone on their best)
- Share the Company Vision Consistently
- Recognize everyone individually for actions in congruence with company values & goals
- Allow others their voice and opportunity to lead
- Listen passionately and actively
- Show people they are heard
- Be consistent with check-ins & following up with your team
I bring this up because many clients – like gym owners – who are familiar with in-person meetings are struggling in this age of remote work…
But these principles of great leadership apply whether you are “unsocially-distancing” (i.e. side-by-side) or across the world on Zoom.
The great news is that all of this is capable on both the phone and through video conferencing.
Joel Marion and Josh Bezoni run a $100 million a year supplement company through phone calls… Jason Capital runs his Empire with virtual meetings.
Tim Cook runs Apple with a Sunday night virtual meeting with his top executives – they did this even before the pandemic… and even used simple iphones for the meetings back in 2011.
There are no excuses. We have to get used to this new way of working (virtually)… there is no other choice. Great leaders can lead through – and with – anything.
Sincerely,
Craig Ballantyne
